The latest news in the battle against labor pain has expectant mothers on pins and needles—literally. It seems acupuncture treatments may ease discomfort during labor and delivery. A recent study published by The Cochrane Collaboration, a medical research and assessment group, suggests this alternative therapy may decrease the need for pain-relieving drugs by 30 percent. Acupuncture is not the only solution for soon-to-be moms. Self-hypnosis, acupressure, and aromatherapy have all been explored in similar studies. Combining all four, studies conclude, may offer even more benefit. Beyond modifying pain, these treatments boast their usual effects: lower anxiety, reduced tension, and less pre-labor fear. Perhaps two-for-one Mom and Dad treatments are in order.
