The doctor is in: Spinal Osteoarthritis

By Jacob Teitelbaum MD

Q. I have spinal osteoarthritis and suffer from miserable back pain. What can I do to ease my pain?

A. In combination with 600 to 1,200 mg of calcium and 150 to 400 mg of magnesium, the mineral strontium may help you. Osteoarthritis in the spine occurs when the cartilage coating the spine’s joints gradually deteriorates, causing pain when the bones rub over the roughened cartilage. A study published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases found that 640 mg of daily strontium significantly reduced back pain by building bone density (and even prevented arthritic progression). Also take 400 mg of willow bark daily to ease back pain, which is twice as effective as Motrin.
