Doshic Digestive Aids

Ayurveda, an ancient system of natural medicine from India and yoga’s “sister science,” considers optimal digestion the key to good health and long life. Ayurvedically speaking, gas and bloating signal weak digestive “fire,” or agni, and imbalanced vata, which guides all movement and flow in the body. Digestion works best in warm temperatures and in settled environments. So to correct most digestive ills, eat freshly prepared and correctly spiced warm foods on a regular schedule with a calm mind and body. Restore balance and improve digestion with this easy-to-digest, vata-balancing menu.

Breakfast: Stewed apple or pear with a pinch of fennel powder, ginger, or cinnamon, and a bowl of cooked rice cereal (rice is the easiest cereal to digest).
Lunch: Sautéed or steamed veggies sprinkled with fennel seed and ground cumin. Combine with basmati rice and a protein, such as organic poultry; fish that are sustainably harvested low in contaminants like mercury and PCBs ; or soft, fresh cheese like cottage or mozzarella.
Dinner: Soup (not cream-based), basmati rice, or Indian kitchari (an easily-digested blend of split mung beans cooked with rice) with roasted, baked, sautéed, or steamed fennel- or cumin-topped veggies.
