You Tell Us: Alternative Therapies for Menopause Symptoms

Let's be honest: Menopause is hard. Between the hot flashes, the insomnia, and the mood swings, going through the "change" may seem like a foreign entity has assumed control of the body you thought you knew inside and out. And to top it off, the conventional method of staving off symptoms with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) carries potentially scary risks. Finding an effective natural solution is an individual process—we hope the following therapies help.

We asked you if you'd had success treating fibromyalgia with a natural treatment; here's what you said. Add your thoughts and experiences in the comment box below.

"I am 59 years old and have had little to no issue with menopause symptoms. I have been using high lignan flaxseed oil daily and progesterone cream. Plus I exercise five days a week for at least 30 minutes. I had a coworker that had a terrible onset of hot flashes and insomnia, and I recommended she try 1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil twice a day until symptoms eased. She tried that and on the third week, the hot flashes resolved and she began sleeping normally. This worked for a couple of years and then she began to have more trouble. I recommended she try adding dong quai to what she was taking, and that has resolved all symptoms to date."

"I have had amazing relief from menopause symptoms from a product called Adrenal Fuel made by a company called Natratech. I tried two capsules in the morning and two in the afternoon. Not only has it helped me think clearly again, but also my energy has increased tremendously (no more afternoon energy drain)."

I never suffered any menopausal symptoms.  All that happened is that I stopped my menses – no hot flashes, no mood swings, nothing.  I think that is because I have eaten a vegetarian diet for 28 years, and have been vegan for the last 7 years.  I have always eaten organic, whole foods and incorporate ground flax  seeds and soy products on a daily basis. I also speed walk 4 miles a day 6 days a week, and lift weights 3 days a week.  I maintain a steady weight of 125 lbs., and all my bodily stats, i.e. blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. are perfect.  I truly believe that it is the combination of the organic vegan diet, and the consistent exercise that keeps me healthy.

When I went through menopause, I , too, took flaxseed oil capsules and zinc with vitamin c.  I had very few hot flashes and when my nerves started binging through my body, I took 2 1000mg flaxseed capsules, and they subsided within minutes.  Sometimes I took as many as 12 a day.  If you talk to my husband, he'd tell you He couldn't tell that I was going through menopause.  Almost everybody I mentioned this to, was helped by the flaxseed oil.
