Sustainable Style

By Stacey Lindsay

Meet our favorite designers, creating clothing, shoes, and jewelry that make environmental sustainability synonymous with fashion.

CLOTHING

Eileen Fisher
Muted and classic, Eileen Fisher’s brand of casual wear is certified-organic and made with undyed or colored yarn, according to the Global Organic Textile Standard. Bonus: They’ve built a relationship with their yarn suppliers, bolstering fair trade and fair wages.

Elroy Apparel
This contemporary (yet flirty) women’s clothing line uses materials that are sustainable and socially responsible.

Juleselin
This San Francisco-based company makes tailored women’s clothing with organic cotton, bamboo, and recycled fabrics. Juleselin follows sustainable business practices—from fostering an ethical working environment to using recycled packing materials.

Indigenous Designs
Beautiful handmade knits that support fair trade and are made of natural and organic fibers and environmentally friendly dyes.

Lara Miller
The Chicago designer’s sophisticated yet sexy collection is made with organic cotton, hemp, and soy.

Levi’s Eco Jeans
The globally famed denim brand makes several styles with 100-percent-organic or recycled cotton and plant-based indigo dyes. Look for the green “Levi’s Eco” label on the website.

Loomstate
Design team Rogan Gregory and Scott Mackinlay Hahn founded this casual brand dedicated to organic farming and socially and environmentally responsible production methods. Both the men and women’s collections evoke classic, casual American style.

NatureVsFuture
Each piece from this clothier is bold and artistic. Renewable, organic, and biodegradable materials are mixed with natural fabrics such as wool and bamboo.

Nau
A small company based in Portland, Oregon, Nau designs modern apparel for active people. The men and women’s designs are made from natural, renewable fibers.

Nixxi
This Canadian women’s clothing line offers sleek, formfitting designs made from sustainable cotton and bamboo.

Peligrosa
A Los Angeles–based company that uses reclaimed and certified-organic materials to create sustainable and stylish causal men and women’s clothing.

Prairie Underground
This Seattle-based biz offers tailored, comfortable clothing made from organic cotton and salvaged fabrics.

Stewart+Brown
The husband-and-wife duo behind these organic women’s threads use fabrics grown free of pesticides, herbicides, and defoliants.

SHOES

Beyond Skin
The company’s chic vegan heels, flats, and wedges are made without leather and from eco-friendly fabrics.

Charmone
The Italian microfibers used in this line are water resistant, PVC-free, and less polluting to the environment than leather. And the shoes prove that vegan footwear can be sexy.

El Naturalista
El Naturalist’s comfort-meets-fashion men and women’s shoes are made with natural materials and dyes. Great for weekend forays to the farmer’s market.

Neuaura
This stylish footwear uses locally sourced materials and water-based adhesives. Plus, Neuaura advocates for the protection of animals (they’re 100-percent vegan!).

Olsen Haus
Totally hip and totally vegan, these show-stopping shoes are made with high standards of social and environmental responsibility.

Terra  Plana
Every pair of Terra Plana’s conversation-worthy kickers is made from some recycled material and incorporates stitching to minimize the use of toxic glue. The line includes styles for men, women, and children.

BAGS

Canopy Verde
Stemming from her “waste-not” upbringing in Taiwan, Linda Wong founded this handbag line made of organic-cotton and bamboo-blend fabrics, which are free of chemicals and chrome. Her designs are both earth-friendly and modern.

Noon Solar
It’s in the name: Noon Solar bags have a flexible panel on the outside to provide solar power for your rechargeable devices. Each piece is hand dyed and made of biodegradable or reusable materials.

Teich
Clean design and a deep respect for the environment are the fundamentals of this Brooklyn-based line of handbags. Made from repurposed materials, like hemp canvas, linen, and leather from hunting waste, these bags are functional and chic.

JEWELRY

Arteco
Made from discarded computer and electronic parts, this eclectic jewelry marries art, technology, and responsibility.

GreenKarat
Rather than employing industrial methods to extract precious metals and gems, GreenKarat uses recycled resources that do not tax the earth. Each ecologically responsible piece of jewelry represents the company’s goal to end destructive mining.

Mollie Dash
This Brooklyn-based line offers vintage and handmade jewelry created with discarded and recycled materials. A minimal amount of new stones are used in each design.

Moonrise Jewelry
From the mining and sourcing of materials to the manufacturing, Moonrise is committed to ethical practices. Their “eco-jewelry” line is made of ethically and globally sourced materials and includes a labeling system explaining how each piece is uniquely green.
